In conversation with Oteiza, sound and color in ART

An improvisational performance included in the activities celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Durango Museum of Art and History. A proposal that combines the Visual Arts (creation on site on canvas), the body as an expressive medium, and sound as an expansion of the unconscious.

In this proposal, in which we dialogue with the works of art of Oteiza, in a poetic essay that is functional between sound, color and body. Our intention was to create a special art work to celebrate the Durango Museum of Art and History 40st Anniversary. We connected and explored with the sensitive material exhibited in Jorge Oteiza’s exhibition to offer a creative process that was later based on improvisation. This proposal is a joint creation of the Basque singer Beñat Achiary and the artist Alaitz Muro Larizgoitia.

Recreation is for us the key word of this human and artistic adventure. It is an adventure that can be carried out with renewed forms of art, first new to us. In Zuberoa we experienced the adventure a long time ago, in the Ibaola hill, which has left us a mark forever.

The landscape of the museum became the scene of a creative process, precisely the visual art (creation on canvas in situ), which combined the body as an expressive support and the sound as an extension of the unconscious. The process of creation left us with a tangible and visible record that reflected the main themes of our work – identity and memory.

The environment, the context, is an element of great importance and we had a great opportunity because, in the Museum, several works by the artist Jorge Oteiza were exhibited. This allowed us to connect and explore with his language and the information that is hidden in it.

The new perception proposes a multiple dimension of experiencing space-time to transcend the tangible and connect with the territory of the invisible. The objective is to materialise, through a living and organic process, what is mobilised in the space of the unconscious, and to evoke a part of the collective memory that preserves the identity signs of the Basque soul.

This magical synthesis between artistic manifestations is not only a sum, nor a consumption, but an alchemy test of our wise orality. That alchemy that comes to light in that particular situation that improvisation often demands of us.

In short, Beñat Achiary and Alaitz Muro Larizgoitia proposed the possibility of living a unique and novel process of face-to-face creation. To make way for those who want it to emerge, in dialogue with Oteiza’s works, sound and colours, nourishing the creative process, with improvisation as the central axis.
